After 50 years of service, Dr. Anthony Fauci will tell his life story in a memoir set to be released on June 18.
Viking Press announced its plan Thursday to publish “On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service,” which will chronicle the expansive career of the 83-year-old public health expert who gained international recognition as the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I hope that this memoir will serve as a personalized document for the reader to understand better the daunting challenges that we have faced in public health over the past 40 years,” Fauci said in a statement. “I would also like to inspire younger individuals in particular to consider careers in public health and public service.”
The 496-page autobiography, available for presale in multiple formats, had already ranked as the #1 New Release on Amazon by Friday.
“Dr. Fauci’s memoir will reach back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, his decades of dedication to caring for critically ill patients, and his many scientific accomplishments, and carry through close relationships with seven presidents,” his publisher said about the book.
From 1984 to 2022, the Brooklyn-born epidemiologist — who worked under U.S. presidents dating back to the Reagan era — served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and was the organization’s trailblazing HIV/AIDS researchers.
President George W. Bush awarded Fauci the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008 before he went on to advise Obama on the Zika and Ebola viruses.
Fauci became a lightning rod among conservatives when he clashed with the Trump administration about vaccine mandates and public-safety guidelines at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also took aim at the trusted medical authority with their respective books, “Deception: The Great COVID Cover-Up” and “The Real Anthony Fauci.”
After serving as President Biden’s chief medical adviser, Fauci took on a role as distinguished professor at Georgetown University in 2023, teaching in both the School of Medicine and McCourt School of Public Policy.
