Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat each had a goal and an assist and the New York Islanders surged past the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 on Thursday night.

Noah Dobson, Kyle Palmieri, Ryan Pulock and Casey Cizikas also scored for the Islanders, who won their second in a row since coming out of the All-Star break. Ilya Sorokin finished with 16 saves and recorded his 16th win of the season.

Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel scored for Tampa Bay, but the Lightning lost their second consecutive game. Jonas Johansson made 18 saves.

The Islanders scored three times in each of the first two periods and limited the Lightning to only 10 shots on net through the first 40 minutes.

Barzal gave New York a 2-1 lead when he skillfully controlled a loose puck off an offensive zone faceoff, then roofed a backhander past Johansson at 14:07 of the first period.

The Islanders extended their lead to two goals after Palmieri buried a pretty pass from Mike Reilly at 18:34.

Hagel deposited a rebound and pulled the Lightning to within one goal early in the second period.

But the Islanders responded with force, scoring three more times in the middle frame to take a commanding 6-2 lead.

Pulock blasted a slap shot and collected his third of the season at 7:10.

Horvat connected on a slap shot of his own at 8:18 that Johannson could have saved if not for a screen from Islanders captain Anders Lee.

Cizikas, in his first game back since being activated from injured reserve, capped the second-period scoring. The gritty forward slid a puck between the legs of Johansson at 15:22.

Dobson registered his seventh goal to open the scoring at 4:07 of the first period. The defenseman was looking for Oliver Wahlstrom on the back post, but the puck deflected off Lightning defenseman Eric Cernak’s skate and into Tampa Bay’s net.

Kucherov tied it at 1 with his team-leading 33rd goal at 6:42 of the first period.

SIDELINED SERGACHEV

Lightning coach Jon Cooper said before the game that D Mikhail Sergachev had surgery in New York on Thursday to stabilize fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. He will miss “significant time,” Cooper said, after his leg bent at an awkward angle after an exchange of hits with Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere on Wednesday.

Jacob Markstrom made 37 saves, Connor Zary and Andrew Mangiapane each had a goal and an assist and the Calgary Flames defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-3 on Thursday night for their third straight win.

Mikael Backlund, Kevin Rooney and Andrei Kuzmenko also scored for Calgary, which was coming off a 4-1 win at Boston on Tuesday to start a four-game trip that includes facing the three New York/New Jersey-area teams.

Defenseman Noah Hanifan had two assists for the Flames, whose winning streak comes after a four-game skid.

Ondrej Palat scored twice, Nico Hischier also had a goal and Jesper Bratt had three assists for New Jersey, which was coming off a 5-3 win at home over Colorado on Tuesday.

Palat opened the scoring at 15:39 of the first, completing a 2-on-1 break with Bratt. Hischier also assisted.

Backlund, the Flames’ captain, then tied it with his 11th goal at 18:10 of the first.

Zary put Calgary ahead at 3:53 of the second, nudging a loose puck in the crease past Vitek Vanecek.

Rooney made it 3-1 at 2:55 of the third with his first of the season.

Hischier narrowed the deficit to one goal with a short-handed breakaway score at 4:02 of the third, his 14th goal of the season.

Kuzmenko restored the Flames’ two-goal lead at 9:56 of the third with his 10th goal, and second in two games since joining Calgary in a trade from Vancouver.

Jimmy Vesey scores 2, Jonathan Quick wins again as Rangers down Lightning 3-1 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/08/jimmy-vesey-jonathan-quick-new-york-rangers-tampa-bay-lightning/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 05:01:38 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7512965 By Allan Kreda

Jimmy Vesey scored twice and Jonathan Quick made 18 saves as the New York Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1 on Wednesday night for their third straight win.

Jonny Brodzinski also scored for the Rangers, who won for the second time in three days after the All-Star break. Quick has started both games. The Rangers are 4-1-1 in their last six games.

“You take what comes and you try to make one save after another,” Quick said ”When we play like we did, it gives us a good chance to win every night.”

At 38, Quick became the oldest goaltender in Rangers history to win three straight games. He also defeated Ottawa 7-2 in New York’s last game before the All-Star break on Jan. 27.

“He’s a legend, one of the best American goalies of all time,” Vesey said of Quick, who got his 387th career win, two behind Dominik Hasek for 15th on the all-time wins list. “He’s been a rock for us all season. He just battles and competes and has some swagger in net.”

Brandon Hagel scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 21 saves. The Lightning had won three straight and eight of their previous nine.

Vesey gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead as he roofed a backhand past Vasilevskiy at 1:15 of the middle period.

Brodzinski increased the lead with this third goal with 2:14 remaining in the second.

Hagel got Tampa Bay on the scoreboard at 5:29 of the third to make it one-goal game.

Vesey then sealed the win with a empty-net goal with 1:01 remaining for his 11th of the season. The Rangers were coming off a 2-1 overtime win over Colorado at home on Monday.

“We were fortunate to get two goals in the second,” Vesey said. ”We’ve gone over a lot of things on the defensive side. We’ve done a good job with two games we can build on.”

Tampa Bay had its first power-play chance of the night with 4:38 left in the third when Mika Zibanejad was sent off for holding. However, the Lightning were held at bay by Quick, who was making his third straight start and improved to 12-4-2 in his first season with the Rangers.

The Rangers beat the Lightning for the fifth straight time at home and New York is 15-0-0 at home this season when allowing the opposition three or fewer goals .

“That game was there for the taking,” Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said. ”It’s frustrating.”

The game was delayed at the seven-minute mark of the second when Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev had to leave the ice on a stretcher after his left leg bent at an awkward angle in a play along the boards in the Tampa Bay end. Sergachev became tangled with Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere and his left skate seemed to stick in the ice as his knee twisted unnaturally.

He was declared out for the rest of the game before the end of the second period.

“You pray for the best but obviously it’s not looking great,” Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman said.

Sergachev had returned Wednesday after missing 17 games with a leg injury suffered in December.

“He’s a really tough kid. It goes beyond hockey,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, who left his bench to speak with Sergachev as he was taken from the ice. Cooper wouldn’t speculate if Sergachev’s injury could be season-ending.

“Let’s not think that way,” Cooper said.

John Marino scores winner as Devils down Avalanche 5-3 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/06/john-marino-devils-avalanche-nhl/ Wed, 07 Feb 2024 03:47:15 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7511367 John Marino scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period and Vitek Vanecek made 35 saves as the New Jersey Devils beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-3 on Tuesday night.

After the Avalanche tied the contest with two quick goals earlier in the third, Marino put New Jersey ahead at 17:43 with his fourth goal of the season.

Jesper Bratt, Dawson Mercer, Chris Tierney and Erik Haula also scored for New Jersey, which had lost two in a row. Nico Hischier had two assists.

Trailing 3-1 just over eight minutes into the third, Colorado defensemen Cale Makar and Samuel Girard scored 29 seconds apart to tie the game. The Avalanche have 42 goals and 158 points from defensemen to lead the league.

Makar’s goal came at 8:29, followed by Girard’s at 8:58. Makar has 306 points in 284 career games, one point shy of tying Tyson Barrie as the highest scoring defenseman in franchise history.

Mikko Rantanen also scored and Jonathan Drouin had two assists for the Avalanche.

Bratt’s 20th goal of the season came against Avalanche rookie netminder Justus Annunen at 3:49 of the middle period to put New Jersey ahead after the teams traded goals in the first.

Bratt, who leads New Jersey with 52 points, reached the 20-goal mark for the third-straight season. He had a career-high 32 goals last year.

Mercer made it 3-1 with his 14th goal at 6:47 of the second.

The Devils were playing for the first time since Jan. 27, when they lost 6-3 at Tampa Bay.

Vanecek, who won 33 games last season in his first campaign with the Devils, improved to 17-8-2.

Rantanen opened the scoring 1:23 into the contest with his 28th of the season, intercepting a Devils clearing attempt and rifling the puck past Vanecek.

Tierney tied it 42 seconds later with his first goal of the season and first with the Devils.

Annunen played for Colorado after starter Alexandar Georgiev played in Monday’s 2-1 loss to the Rangers. He had 26 saves.

Devils forward Tyler Toffoli, who leads the team with 21 goals, was scratched because of illness.

New Jersey’s Jack Hughes missed his 11th straight game with an upper-body injury. Hughes, who has 15 goals and 45 points in 32 games, hasn’t played since Jan. 5 when he was hurt late in a home win over Chicago. Hughes has been skating with the team in practice in recent days.

New Jersey also continued to be without injured defensemen Dougie Hamilton, Jonas Siegenthaler and Brendan Smith.

Colorado’s leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon had his 14-game points streak snapped. He had extended the streak by scoring Colorado’s only goal in Monday’s loss to the Rangers.

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves to stop his five-game losing streak, and first-year Rangers coach Peter Laviolette tied Al Arbour for seventh place in NHL history with 782 career wins.

Alexis Lafreniere, Chris Kreider, Zac Jones, Jonny Brodzinski, Blake Wheeler and Kaapo Kakko also scored for the Rangers (30-16-3), who were coming off a 5-2 loss to Vegas at home Friday night.

New York improved to 9-0-0 in the second half of back-to-back games and heads into the All-Star break atop the Metropolitan Division.

Six players had multiple points for the Rangers.

Ottawa got off to a solid start with Brady Tkachuk and Jakob Chychrun scoring the first two goals, but things fell apart in the second period. Joonas Korpisalo was pulled after allowing four goals on 17 shots. Mads Sogaard gave up two goals on 11 shots.

The Senators (18-25-2) had been riding a five-game point streak (3-0-2) coming into the game.

A lackluster third period by the Senators had the sellout crowd heading for the exits early. Panarin added an empty-net goal and Kakko rounded out the scoring with a late goal. The second period started off well for the Senators, with Chychrun scoring a power-play goal at 1:24, but the Rangers responded with five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead.

Lafreniere opened the scoring when the puck bounced off the back boards into Korpisalo and he grabbed the loose puck and tucked it in. Kreider tied the game with a shot from the top of the circle. Mika Zibanejad picked up his 500th point with the Rangers on the play.

The Rangers scored 39 seconds later when Jones took a cross-ice pass from Panarin, and they made it 4-2 on Brodzinksi’s second of the season 2:04 later. That was the end of Korpisalo’s night.

Just more then five minutes later, Zibanejad beat Thomas Chabot and dished a pass to Wheeler to beat Sogaard.

The Senators opened the scoring with Claude Giroux finding Tkachuk for his 20th of the season. Giroux got his 700th career assist on the play.

New York was missing two top-four defensemen in captain Jacob Trouba and injured Ryan Lindgren. Trouba served the first of a two-game suspension for elbowing Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeyev.

Jonathan Marchessault scores 3 times and Adin Hill stops 36 shots as Golden Knights beat Rangers 5-2 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/26/jonathan-marchessault-scores-3-times-and-adin-hill-stops-36-shots-as-golden-knights-beat-rangers-5-2/ Sat, 27 Jan 2024 03:15:35 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7456255 By VIN A. CHERWOO

Jonathan Marchessault scored three times, Adin Hill stopped 36 shots and the surging Vegas Golden Knights beat the New York Rangers 5-2 on Friday night.

Keegan Kolesar and Sheldon Rempal also scored to help Vegas improve to 5-0-1 in its last six games. Ivan Barbashev had three assists and Nicolas Roy added two.

Blake Wheeler had a goal and an assist, and Kaapo Kakko also scored for the Rangers, who came off a 1-2-1 West Coast trip and have lost nine of 13 (4-7-2) this month. Igor Shesterkin finished with 15 saves.

Marchessault pushed the Golden Knights’ lead to 4-1 at 2:10 of the third period. Barbashev’s shot from the left side rebounded off the end boards and Marchessault quickly fired it past Shesterkin from the right side.

New York pulled Shesterkin for an extra skater with a little more than four minutes remaining, and Kakko scored on a rebound from the left side with 1:06 remaining.

Marchessault completed his second hat trick of the season and seventh of his career into an empty net with 30 seconds remaining. It was his 25th goal of the season and gave him eight goals and three assists during a six-game point streak.

The Golden Knights, 3 for 23 on the power play in their previous eight games, got two chances in the middle period but didn’t manage a shot on goal during either advantage.

Shortly after the first power play expired, Kolesar blocked a pass attempt by Artemi Panarin and skated up the ice on a breakaway and beat Shesterkin on the glove side at 3:18. It was his fourth.

Just 46 seconds later, Marchessault deflected Barbashev’s fluttering shot from the left circle past Shesterkin to push Vegas’ lead to 3-1 and extended his point streak.

New York outshot Vegas 15-6 in the first period, but Rempal gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead 5:02 into the game as Paul Cotter’s sharp-angle shot from the right circle appeared to deflect off his stick and Shesterkin’s blocker. The 28-year-old Rempal scored for the second straight game, three days after getting his first NHL goal in Vegas’ 3-2 win at the New York Islanders.

Wheeler tied it 1:31 later as he beat Hill on the glove side from the left circle off a pass from Erik Gustafsson. It was his eighth.

Lafreniere nearly gave the Rangers the lead, but Hill made a glove save while sitting on the ice on the backhand attempt with less than two minutes remaining in the first.

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette made some tweaks to the lineup, moving Wheeler to the top line. The defense pairings were also changed with Gustafsson skating with Adam Fox, and Ryan Lindgren going with Braden Schneider. Lindgren went to the dressing room midway through the first period and didn’t return.

Rangers forward Filip Chytil had a setback in his injury recovery when he was down on the ice for several minutes during the morning practice Friday. He was helped off the ice by teammates Zac Jones and Jake Leschyshyn and tended to by team trainers.

Roope Hintz scores twice, Scott Wedgewood makes 29 saves to lead Stars over Devils 6-2 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/20/roope-hintz-scores-twice-wedgewood-makes-29-saves-to-lead-stars-over-devils/ Sun, 21 Jan 2024 03:23:53 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7425817 By TOM CANAVAN

NEWARK — Roope Hintz scored twice in a three-goal second period and Scott Wedgewood made 29 saves against his former teammates to lead the Dallas Stars to a 6-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night.

Joe Pavelski, Matt Duchene, Craig Smith and Wyatt Johnston also scored as the Stars improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight games against New Jersey. Dallas also spoiled a night the Devils inducted three-time Stanley Cup winner and assistant coach Sergei Brylin into their Ring of Honor at the Prudential Center.

Wedgewood was outstanding in improving to 3-0 against his former teammates, although there was some concern early in the third period when a wicked slapshot by Michael McLeod hit him in the facemask and knocked it off. He gave up late goals to Jesper Bratt and Tyler Toffoli after the Stars built a 6-0 lead.

Nico Daws finished with 30 saves for the Devils, whose four-goal loss matched their worst of the season.

Pavelski gave the Star the lead after being set up by Jamie Benn between the circles for a power-play goal at 5:42.

Hintz seemed to take the air out of New Jersey with a spectacular short-handed goal at 7:58 where he skated around rookie defenseman Simon Nemec and beat Daws with a nifty backhander in close.

Duchene put his 15th of the season into an open net after combining with Tyler Seguin in close at 16:31 and Hintz tallied his 20th into another virtually empty net with 18 seconds left in the period.

Smith and Johnston scored meaningless goals in the third period to send many of the Devils fans home early.

The best save of the night for the Stars might have been a combo effort by Wedgewood and Stars captain Benn. The goaltender made a partial save on a Timo Meier shot in close and Benn cleared the puck out of the crease after it got behind him.

New Jersey is now 9-11-2 at home and 1-8-1 in the second game of back-to-back contests.

Cole Caufield breaks tie late in 3rd period to lift Canadiens over Devils 3-2 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/17/cole-caufield-canadiens-devils-nhl-hockey/ Thu, 18 Jan 2024 03:28:55 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7414109 By Tom Canavan

Cole Caufield put in a rebound with 4:31 to play and the Montreal Canadiens beat the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Wednesday night after squandering a two-goal lead early in the third period.

Juraj Slafkovsky and Joshua Roy also scored as the Canadiens won their second straight and improved to 4-2-2 in their last eight games. Sam Montembeault made 28 saves.

Luke Hughes and Alexander Holtz scored power-play goals for New Jersey in the opening 1:37 of the third to tie it. Nico Daws stopped 22 shots in his third consecutive start.

Daws made the initial stop on a drive by Jordan Harris. Sean Monahan, who had two assists, nudged the puck closer to the net and Caufield swatted it over the goal line.

Trailing 2-0 late in the second period, the Devils caught a break when Nick Suzuki was called for a double minor for high-sticking defenseman Kevin Bahl.

New Jersey didn’t score in the final 45 seconds of the period, but Hughes and Holtz connected on the power play to tie the game.

Hughes’ shot from the point appeared to deflect off the leg of Montreal forward Jake Evans past Montembeault. Holtz got his 11th of the season on a shot from the top of the left circle.

The Canadiens scored first when Daws made a mistake playing the puck and it led to Caufield setting up Slafkovsky in front. It was his sixth goal of the season and second in two games.

Roy, a fifth-round draft pick in 2021 who was playing his third NHL game, doubled the margin with a slam dunk in front after being set up by Monahan. It was his first NHL goal and Monahan was quick to grab the puck for the 20-year-old.
