Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat each had a goal and an assist and the New York Islanders surged past the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 on Thursday night.

Noah Dobson, Kyle Palmieri, Ryan Pulock and Casey Cizikas also scored for the Islanders, who won their second in a row since coming out of the All-Star break. Ilya Sorokin finished with 16 saves and recorded his 16th win of the season.

Nikita Kucherov and Brandon Hagel scored for Tampa Bay, but the Lightning lost their second consecutive game. Jonas Johansson made 18 saves.

The Islanders scored three times in each of the first two periods and limited the Lightning to only 10 shots on net through the first 40 minutes.

Barzal gave New York a 2-1 lead when he skillfully controlled a loose puck off an offensive zone faceoff, then roofed a backhander past Johansson at 14:07 of the first period.

The Islanders extended their lead to two goals after Palmieri buried a pretty pass from Mike Reilly at 18:34.

Hagel deposited a rebound and pulled the Lightning to within one goal early in the second period.

But the Islanders responded with force, scoring three more times in the middle frame to take a commanding 6-2 lead.

Pulock blasted a slap shot and collected his third of the season at 7:10.

Horvat connected on a slap shot of his own at 8:18 that Johannson could have saved if not for a screen from Islanders captain Anders Lee.

Cizikas, in his first game back since being activated from injured reserve, capped the second-period scoring. The gritty forward slid a puck between the legs of Johansson at 15:22.

Dobson registered his seventh goal to open the scoring at 4:07 of the first period. The defenseman was looking for Oliver Wahlstrom on the back post, but the puck deflected off Lightning defenseman Eric Cernak’s skate and into Tampa Bay’s net.

Kucherov tied it at 1 with his team-leading 33rd goal at 6:42 of the first period.

SIDELINED SERGACHEV

Lightning coach Jon Cooper said before the game that D Mikhail Sergachev had surgery in New York on Thursday to stabilize fractures to both the tibia and fibula in his left leg. He will miss “significant time,” Cooper said, after his leg bent at an awkward angle after an exchange of hits with Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere on Wednesday.

The New York Islanders fired coach Lane Lambert and replaced him with Hall of Fame goaltender Patrick Roy.

President of hockey operations and general manager Lou Lamoriello announced the stunning move Saturday.

The Islanders have lost four games in a row and six of seven to fall out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Lambert was midway through his second season on the job. Roy coached the Colorado Avalanche for three seasons from 2013-16 before abruptly resigning a month before training camp.

NASHVILLE — Alexandre Carrier scored with 7.9 seconds remaining in the third period, and the Nashville Predators beat the New York Islanders 3-1 on Saturday night.

Luke Evangelista and Juuso Parssinen also scored in Nashville’s third win in four games. Juuse Saros made 24 stops.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored and Ilya Sorokin made 25 saves for the Islanders, who have dropped three of four.

With time winding down in the third, Carrier’s slap shot went off the stick of Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield and over Sorokin’s shoulder.

Saros is 7-1-0 in his career against the Islanders.

Parssinen added an empty-netter with 1 second remaining.

After two scoreless periods, Pageau found the back of the net 12 minutes into the third when he deflected Noah Dobson’s shot by Saros.

Evangelista tied it with 4:52 remaining with a power-play wrist shot from the right circle.

New York’s Brock Nelson played his 800th career game.

Mathew Barzal scored 21 seconds into overtime, Ilya Sorokin made 32 saves and the New York Islanders rallied to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Thursday night.

Barzal capped a comeback with his 12th goal of the season after assisting on the first three goals. Kyle Palmieri, Alexander Romanov and Bo Horvat also scored and defenseman Noah Dobson had four assists.

Toronto star Auston Matthews scored 26 seconds into the second period to give Toronto a 2-1 lead, then tucked a backhand past Sorokin at 2:40 for his league-leading 33rd goal and a 3-1 edge.

Romanov cut it to one at 4:18 of the second, and Horvat tied it with another power-play goal. Horvat has 17 goals.

Palmieri put the Islanders ahead 40 seconds into the game, beating Martin Jones on a power-play. The Islanders have scored 28 power-play goals, just seven short of their total last season.

Bobby McMann tied it for Toronto in the first.

The Islanders were coming off a 5-2 home loss to Vancouver on Tuesday night. Toronto also lost 4-3 to the Islanders in overtime on Dec. 11 in their previous meeting.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Julien Gauthier lead Islanders past Capitals, 5-1 https://www.nydailynews.com/2023/12/29/jean-gabriel-pageau-julien-gauthier-islanders-captials-nhl/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 04:15:49 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7336947 Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored twice and added two assists, Julien Gauthier had two goals and an assist, and the New York Islanders defeated the Washington Capitals 5-1 Friday.

Ilya Sorokin made 26 saves and the Islanders improved to 7-1-3 in their last 11 games at UBS arena. Defenseman Noah Dobson also scored for New York.

“You saw the response to a bad game,” Islanders captain Anders Lee said. That was evident tonight and that was more indicative of who we’ve been of late. … Guys were working, guys were smart, we didn’t have as many turnovers. We played the game much better tonight and buried our chances.”

Darcy Kuemper finished with 24 saves for Washington in relief of Charlie Lindgren who left the game with an upper-body injury in the first period. Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored for Washington, which has lost three in a row.

Pageau blasted a one-timer to record his third goal of the season and open the scoring at 4:51. Gauthier intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and led the rush into Capitals territory prior to sliding the puck to defenseman Alexander Romanov who set up the one-timer.

Pageau scored his second and capped off the scoring at 14:26 of the third period when he roofed a wrist shot past the glove of Kuemper to extend the Islanders lead to 5-0.

Gauthier scored twice within 17 seconds in the middle of the third period to give the Islanders a 4-0 lead.

“You got a 2-0 game going into the third period, that next goal is huge,” Islanders forward Matt Martin said. “It was a big period especially by Pageau and Gauthier and their line. … You wouldn’t want to make a mistake to allow the other team back into the game, you want to make them earn it. I thought we did a good job of locking them down tonight.”

Gauthier buried a long-range rebound in the slot and then converted a nifty forehand-backhand combination to help the Islanders regain their composure after getting trounced 7-0 earlier this week against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Pageau assisted on both of Gauthier’s goals.

“I thought we had a good character response all night long,” Islanders coach Lane Lambert said.

Dobson gave the Islanders a two-goal lead with a slap shot at 6:01 of the second period. Mathew Barzal entered the Capitals zone with speed and assisted Dobson with a drop pass. Bo Horvat registered a helper on the play.

Aube-Kubel spoiled Sorokin’s shutout bid in the final minute of the third period.

“We just got to do more, everybody’s got to do more,” Capitals coach Spencer Carberry said.

Martin returned to the lineup for the first time since Nov. 15, missing the previous 19 games which included two stints on IR. Casey Cizikas was sidelined due to illness and goaltender Semyon Varlamov did not dress and is considered day-to-day.

Capitals defenseman Martin Fehervary sustained an upper-body injury in the first period and did not return.

POND HOCKEY

Prior to the game, the Islanders unveiled two public pond hockey rinks on the ground of Belmont Park adjacent to UBS arena, which will host 4-on-4 hockey tournaments, “Learn to Skate,” “Learn to Play” and “Try Hockey for Free” programs on synthetic ice. In addition, the area included small fire pits, heated igloos, carnival games and food trucks.

Jake Guentzel, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang lead Penguins surge past Islanders, 7-0 https://www.nydailynews.com/2023/12/27/jake-guentzel-evgeni-malkin-and-kris-letang-lead-penguins-surge-past-islanders-7-0/ Thu, 28 Dec 2023 03:34:41 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7328169 By SCOTT CHARLES

Jake Guentzel and Evgeni Malkin each scored twice, Kris Letang had six assists including five in the second period alone, and the Pittsburgh Penguins toppled the New York Islanders 7-0 on Wednesday night.

Tristan Jarry finished with 21 saves for his fourth shutout of the season. Rickard Rakell, Radim Zohorna and Valtteri Puustinen also scored for Pittsburgh and Marcus Pettersson picked up four assists.

Letang became the first defenseman in NHL history to record five points in a period and the first player of any position in Penguins history to do so.

Ilya Sorokin made 19 saves as the Islanders’ nine-game point streak on home ice (6-0-3) came to an end. Semyon Varlamov replaced Sorokin to begin the third period and made six saves.

Pittsburgh scored six times within a 10:27 stretch of the second period.

Guentzel scored twice within 12 seconds to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead. He cleverly redirected Letang’s shot that was headed wide of the net past Sorokin prior to converting a breakaway.

Letang took advantage of a gap in the Islanders neutral zone coverage and hit Guentzel with a pass in stride behind New York’s defense.

Islanders coach Lane Lambert called timeout between Guentzel’s goals in an effort to get control of the game, but the Penguins continued to convert on offense and capitalize on the Islanders poor defensive structure.

Malkin extended the lead to four goals when Reilly Smith found him all alone in the slot at 12:48. Malkin struck again later on a pass from Letang, his fourth assist of the period.

Zohorna capped off an explosive six-goal second period with his fourth of the season at 17:13.

Pittsburgh scored six goals in a single period on the road for the first time since March 21, 2000 when they did it against the Islanders.

Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson was on the ice for four goals while Pittsburgh outshot New York 20-7 in the middle period.

Rakell buried a loose puck that squeaked past Sorokin at 6:44 of the second period to kick off the outburst.

Puustinen converted a one-time feed from Letang midway through the third period for his first NHL goal.

Strome scores in OT and Lapierre has a goal and an assist as the Capitals beat the Islanders 3-2 https://www.nydailynews.com/2023/12/20/strome-scores-in-ot-and-lapierre-has-a-goal-and-an-assist-as-the-capitals-beat-the-islanders-3-2/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 04:22:31 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7300856 Hendrix Lapierre scored a goal and assisted on Joel Edmundson’s first of the season, Dylan Strome had the overtime winner on the power play and the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 3-2 Wednesday night for a second consecutive victory.

The trio of Lapierre, Aliaksei Protas and Anthony Mantha was the Capitals’ best line all game, pinning the Islanders in their own end on numerous shifts and scoring on two of them. Lapierre, back in the NHL after a stint in the minors, was only centering it because Connor McMichael was a late scratch with an illness.

Strome scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season 1:41 into 3-on-3 overtime, and Darcy Kuemper made 30 saves to propel Washington to a fourth win in six games. Strome’s goal stood up to a video review for a high stick.

Alex Ovechkin set up Strome’s goal. Ovechkin’s career-worst goal drought reached 14 games, but his team is still 7-5-2 during this stretch thanks to scoring depth and an infusion of youth.

The Capitals got a big dose of that with the return of Lapierre, 21, and the NHL debut of 19-year-old Ivan Miroshnichenko, their 2022 first-round pick. Miroshnichenko, who was diagnosed with and beat Hodgkin lymphoma last year, took a solo lap at the start of warmups and skated on the third line with Matthew Phillips and fellow Russian Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Edmundson, the defenseman acquired in the offseason for size and depth who was sidelined when he broke his right hand in a training camp scrimmage, is not known for his offense, but he still got a shot through from the point to score for the first time in 28 games. Edmundson’s goal was his first since March 13.

The Islanders were playing on the second of back-to-back nights and looked like it at times. Backup Semyon Varlamov was solid in stopping 33 of the 36 shots he faced. Hudson Fasching scored early in the second period and captain Anders Lee tied it with eight minutes left in regulation to help New York pick up a point.

The Islanders were without Julien Gauthier, after the forward was injured Tuesday against Edmonton. Oliver Wahlstrom replaced him, playing in his first game since Dec. 2.

Anders Lee and Bo Horvat scored power-play goals and the New York Islanders beat the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 on Tuesday night.

Simon Holmstrom scored his league-leading fifth short-handed goal and Ilya Sorokin stopped 30 shots as the Islanders snapped a two-game skid.

Leon Draisaitl scored for Edmonton and Stuart Skinner made 17 saves in the Oilers’ third straight loss.

The Oilers opened the scoring 1:23 into the first period when Draisaitl surprised Sorokin with a shot from the left faceoff circle. It was his 13th of the season.

The Islanders then scored three times in the second period.

Lee tied the score at 2:39 as Kyle Palmieri’s shot squeaked through Skinner’s pads, and Lee buried the loose puck for his eighth.

Brock Nelson found Horvat in the slot and slid a puck from the side to set up his teammate to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead with 8 1/2 minutes left. It was Horvat’s 13th and extended his career-high point streak to 11 games.

Holmstrom hammered a one-time pass from Jean-Gabriel Pageau with 5:50 left after Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkinds made an errant pass in the offensive zone to lead to the odd-man rush.

Edmonton had a chance to pull within one goal but failed to execute on a 58-second two-man advantage and only generated one shot attempt on goal following Holmstrom’s goal.

The Oilers finished 0 for 4 on the power play.

Edmonton captain Connor McDavid was held off the scoresheet, ending his 12-game point streak.

Islanders forward Julien Gauthier left the game early in the second period and did not return.

Josh Anderson scores twice lifting Canadiens to 5-3 win over Islanders https://www.nydailynews.com/2023/12/16/josh-anderson-scores-twice-lifting-canadiens-to-5-3-win-over-islanders/ Sun, 17 Dec 2023 03:52:17 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7284915 MONTREAL — Josh Anderson scored twice as the Montreal Canadiens held on for a 5-3 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.

Cole Caufield, with his first goal in seven games, Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak also scored for Montreal, while Sean Monahan, Nick Suzuki and Justin Barron pitched in with two assists each.

Sam Montembeault stopped 30 shots as the Canadiens won for just the second time in their last 10 home games.

Anderson beat a goalie for the first time this season. He entered the night with one goal — an empty-netter — through 29 games.

Brock Nelson scored twice, Noah Dobson had three assists and Semyon Varlamov finished with 36 saves for New York, which trailed 4-0 entering the third period but scored three times to make it a one-goal game. It was the Islanders’ first regulation loss in December.

Bo Horvat extended his point streak to a career-high 10 games with New York’s third goal.

Montreal controlled the play in the first period and outshot New York 14-10 before taking it up a notch in the second with four unanswered goals.

Armia broke the deadlock at 7:45 of the second period with a wrist shot from the slot over Varlamov’s shoulder.

Anderson doubled the lead with a shot through a screen at 10:35.

Montreal then scored twice 15 seconds apart in the final minute to take a commanding lead. Anderson scored his second of the night by driving to the net before Caufield finished a tick-tack-toe play with Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky at 19:21.

The third period was all New York.

Nelson scored short-handed 2:07 into the period to get the Islanders on the board before adding another at even strength 1:36 later to cut the deficit in half. Nelson leads the Islanders with 15 goals this season.

Horvat buried a rebound at 14:06 to bring New York within one.

The Canadiens held off some sustained pressure from the Islanders the rest of the way and Dvorak scored into an empty net with 22 seconds left.

David Pastrnak scored in the third round of a shootout to give the Boston Bruins a 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders on Friday night.

Pastrnak, Morgan Geekie, James van Reimsdyk and Mason Lohrei scored in regulation, with Lohrei tying it with 3:09 left on a bank shot from behind the goal line. Linus Ullmark made 34 saves to help Eastern Conference-leading Boston improve to 19-5-4.

Brock Nelson, Bo Horvat, Alexander Romanov and Simon Holmstrom scored for New York and Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves. New York had won four in a row.

Following a wide-open overtime session in which the teams traded chances, Charlie Coyle and Pastrnak scored in the shootout for Boston, while Holmstrom scored for the Islanders.

Horvat gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead on a power play goal at 5:06 of third that extended his points streak to nine games.

It appeared as if Brad Marchand tied it with 10:21 remaining, but a video review showed the Boston captain punched the puck past Sorokin while laying prone on the ice.

While the goal was disallowed, Marchand drew a tripping penalty on New York captain Anders Lee on the play, and van Riemsdyk’s power-play goal tied it with 9:12 left.

Nelson lifted a feed from Horvat over Ullmark on a power play with 7:59 to go to put New York ahead 4-3.
