Jimmy Vesey scored twice and Jonathan Quick made 18 saves as the New York Rangers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1 on Wednesday night for their third straight win.

Jonny Brodzinski also scored for the Rangers, who won for the second time in three days after the All-Star break. Quick has started both games. The Rangers are 4-1-1 in their last six games.

“You take what comes and you try to make one save after another,” Quick said ”When we play like we did, it gives us a good chance to win every night.”

At 38, Quick became the oldest goaltender in Rangers history to win three straight games. He also defeated Ottawa 7-2 in New York’s last game before the All-Star break on Jan. 27.

“He’s a legend, one of the best American goalies of all time,” Vesey said of Quick, who got his 387th career win, two behind Dominik Hasek for 15th on the all-time wins list. “He’s been a rock for us all season. He just battles and competes and has some swagger in net.”

Brandon Hagel scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 21 saves. The Lightning had won three straight and eight of their previous nine.

Vesey gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead as he roofed a backhand past Vasilevskiy at 1:15 of the middle period.

Brodzinski increased the lead with this third goal with 2:14 remaining in the second.

Hagel got Tampa Bay on the scoreboard at 5:29 of the third to make it one-goal game.

Vesey then sealed the win with a empty-net goal with 1:01 remaining for his 11th of the season. The Rangers were coming off a 2-1 overtime win over Colorado at home on Monday.

“We were fortunate to get two goals in the second,” Vesey said. ”We’ve gone over a lot of things on the defensive side. We’ve done a good job with two games we can build on.”

Tampa Bay had its first power-play chance of the night with 4:38 left in the third when Mika Zibanejad was sent off for holding. However, the Lightning were held at bay by Quick, who was making his third straight start and improved to 12-4-2 in his first season with the Rangers.

The Rangers beat the Lightning for the fifth straight time at home and New York is 15-0-0 at home this season when allowing the opposition three or fewer goals .

“That game was there for the taking,” Lightning captain Steven Stamkos said. ”It’s frustrating.”

The game was delayed at the seven-minute mark of the second when Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev had to leave the ice on a stretcher after his left leg bent at an awkward angle in a play along the boards in the Tampa Bay end. Sergachev became tangled with Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere and his left skate seemed to stick in the ice as his knee twisted unnaturally.

He was declared out for the rest of the game before the end of the second period.

“You pray for the best but obviously it’s not looking great,” Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman said.

Sergachev had returned Wednesday after missing 17 games with a leg injury suffered in December.

“He’s a really tough kid. It goes beyond hockey,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper, who left his bench to speak with Sergachev as he was taken from the ice. Cooper wouldn’t speculate if Sergachev’s injury could be season-ending.

“Let’s not think that way,” Cooper said.

Rangers score 7 unanswered goals, beat Senators 7-2 heading into All-Star break https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/27/rangers-score-7-unanswered-goals-beat-senators/ Sun, 28 Jan 2024 03:27:16 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7462487 OTTAWA, Ontario — Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, and the New York Rangers scored seven unanswered goals to beat the Ottawa Senators 7-2 on Saturday night.

Jonathan Quick made 29 saves to stop his five-game losing streak, and first-year Rangers coach Peter Laviolette tied Al Arbour for seventh place in NHL history with 782 career wins.

Alexis Lafreniere, Chris Kreider, Zac Jones, Jonny Brodzinski, Blake Wheeler and Kaapo Kakko also scored for the Rangers (30-16-3), who were coming off a 5-2 loss to Vegas at home Friday night.

New York improved to 9-0-0 in the second half of back-to-back games and heads into the All-Star break atop the Metropolitan Division.

Six players had multiple points for the Rangers.

Ottawa got off to a solid start with Brady Tkachuk and Jakob Chychrun scoring the first two goals, but things fell apart in the second period. Joonas Korpisalo was pulled after allowing four goals on 17 shots. Mads Sogaard gave up two goals on 11 shots.

The Senators (18-25-2) had been riding a five-game point streak (3-0-2) coming into the game.

A lackluster third period by the Senators had the sellout crowd heading for the exits early. Panarin added an empty-net goal and Kakko rounded out the scoring with a late goal. The second period started off well for the Senators, with Chychrun scoring a power-play goal at 1:24, but the Rangers responded with five straight goals to take a 5-2 lead.

Lafreniere opened the scoring when the puck bounced off the back boards into Korpisalo and he grabbed the loose puck and tucked it in. Kreider tied the game with a shot from the top of the circle. Mika Zibanejad picked up his 500th point with the Rangers on the play.

The Rangers scored 39 seconds later when Jones took a cross-ice pass from Panarin, and they made it 4-2 on Brodzinksi’s second of the season 2:04 later. That was the end of Korpisalo’s night.

Just more then five minutes later, Zibanejad beat Thomas Chabot and dished a pass to Wheeler to beat Sogaard.

The Senators opened the scoring with Claude Giroux finding Tkachuk for his 20th of the season. Giroux got his 700th career assist on the play.

New York was missing two top-four defensemen in captain Jacob Trouba and injured Ryan Lindgren. Trouba served the first of a two-game suspension for elbowing Golden Knights forward Pavel Dorofeyev.

Jonathan Marchessault scores 3 times and Adin Hill stops 36 shots as Golden Knights beat Rangers 5-2 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/26/jonathan-marchessault-scores-3-times-and-adin-hill-stops-36-shots-as-golden-knights-beat-rangers-5-2/ Sat, 27 Jan 2024 03:15:35 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7456255 By VIN A. CHERWOO

Jonathan Marchessault scored three times, Adin Hill stopped 36 shots and the surging Vegas Golden Knights beat the New York Rangers 5-2 on Friday night.

Keegan Kolesar and Sheldon Rempal also scored to help Vegas improve to 5-0-1 in its last six games. Ivan Barbashev had three assists and Nicolas Roy added two.

Blake Wheeler had a goal and an assist, and Kaapo Kakko also scored for the Rangers, who came off a 1-2-1 West Coast trip and have lost nine of 13 (4-7-2) this month. Igor Shesterkin finished with 15 saves.

Marchessault pushed the Golden Knights’ lead to 4-1 at 2:10 of the third period. Barbashev’s shot from the left side rebounded off the end boards and Marchessault quickly fired it past Shesterkin from the right side.

New York pulled Shesterkin for an extra skater with a little more than four minutes remaining, and Kakko scored on a rebound from the left side with 1:06 remaining.

Marchessault completed his second hat trick of the season and seventh of his career into an empty net with 30 seconds remaining. It was his 25th goal of the season and gave him eight goals and three assists during a six-game point streak.

The Golden Knights, 3 for 23 on the power play in their previous eight games, got two chances in the middle period but didn’t manage a shot on goal during either advantage.

Shortly after the first power play expired, Kolesar blocked a pass attempt by Artemi Panarin and skated up the ice on a breakaway and beat Shesterkin on the glove side at 3:18. It was his fourth.

Just 46 seconds later, Marchessault deflected Barbashev’s fluttering shot from the left circle past Shesterkin to push Vegas’ lead to 3-1 and extended his point streak.

New York outshot Vegas 15-6 in the first period, but Rempal gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead 5:02 into the game as Paul Cotter’s sharp-angle shot from the right circle appeared to deflect off his stick and Shesterkin’s blocker. The 28-year-old Rempal scored for the second straight game, three days after getting his first NHL goal in Vegas’ 3-2 win at the New York Islanders.

Wheeler tied it 1:31 later as he beat Hill on the glove side from the left circle off a pass from Erik Gustafsson. It was his eighth.

Lafreniere nearly gave the Rangers the lead, but Hill made a glove save while sitting on the ice on the backhand attempt with less than two minutes remaining in the first.

Rangers coach Peter Laviolette made some tweaks to the lineup, moving Wheeler to the top line. The defense pairings were also changed with Gustafsson skating with Adam Fox, and Ryan Lindgren going with Braden Schneider. Lindgren went to the dressing room midway through the first period and didn’t return.

Rangers forward Filip Chytil had a setback in his injury recovery when he was down on the ice for several minutes during the morning practice Friday. He was helped off the ice by teammates Zac Jones and Jake Leschyshyn and tended to by team trainers.

Blake Wheeler and Kaapo Kakko lead Rangers to 5-2 win over Kraken https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/17/blake-wheeler-and-kaapo-kakko-lead-rangers-to-5-2-win-over-kraken/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 05:51:44 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7409713 By Allan Kreda

Blake Wheeler had two goals, Kaapo Kakko scored in his second game back from a long injury absence and the New York Rangers beat the Seattle Kraken 5-2 on Tuesday night.

Igor Shesterkin made 29 saves as the Rangers won their second straight after four consecutive losses. Vincent Trocheck and Erik Gustafsson scored in the first period for New York.

“That was important for the team. A huge win,” Shesterkin said before the Rangers head west on a four-game trip to face Vegas, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Jose.

Jordan Eberle and Jared McCann had the Seattle goals.

The Rangers were coming off a 2-1 home win over Washington on Sunday to snap their skid. Seattle’s nine-game winning streak ended with a 3-0 loss at Pittsburgh on Monday.

Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox each had two assists for the Rangers, who are 5-0-1 against the Kraken — an expansion franchise in 2021-22 — and have outscored them 23-12.

New York is 15-6-0 halfway through its home schedule and 17-0-1 when scoring four or more goals this season.

The Rangers also improved to 13-5-1 against Western Conference teams and 8-2-0 versus Pacific Division opponents.

“In the second period we had great opportunities, we just didn’t execute,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. ”We had a lot of jump, but guys who played a lot of minutes last night also had to play big minutes tonight, and that wears on you.”

The 37-year-old Wheeler, former captain of the Winnipeg Jets, scored twice for the second time this season, his 16th in the NHL and first with the Rangers.

“Down the stretch as we head towards the playoffs, we need everyone contributing,” Wheeler said. ”We all have to chip in.”

Trocheck opened the scoring on the power play at 8:22 of the first, redirecting a hard pass from Artemi Panarin past Kraken netminder Chris Driedger for his 14th goal. Fox also assisted.

Trocheck has 14 points, including six goals, in his last nine games. Panarin leads New York with 60 points, including 27 goals.

The Rangers have scored at least one power-play goal in 13 of their last 18 games.

Eberle tied it at 10:41 of the first with a power-play goal of his own. McCann and Oliver Bjorkstrand assisted.

Gustafsson put the Rangers back in front at 11:09 with an unassisted goal, his fourth.

Wheeler made it 3-1 with a deflection at 12:32 of the second. Jonny Brodzinski and Braden Schneider had assists.

Kakko increased the lead with his third goal of the season and first since Nov. 20 at Dallas. He returned for Sunday’s win over Washington after missing 21 games with a lower-body injury sustained against Buffalo on Nov. 27.

Kakko whipped the puck past Driedger after getting a backhand pass from Zibanejad, who was streaking down left wing. Chris Kreider also assisted.

Kakko said his first game back — playing with linemates Zibanejad and Kreider — was a bit of a physical battle. But the 22-year-old Finnish forward said he felt better during his second game in three days.

“Always when you score a goal, it feels good,” he said. ”Our line played a good game.”

McCann made it 4-2 with a power-play goal at 14:24 of the third, his team-best 17th of the season.

Wheeler scored his second of the night and seventh of the season into an empty net at 17:22.

“Going into the game, we were harping that we couldn’t give them odd-man chances because they have a lot of speed and make you pay on those,” Wheeler said of the Kraken. ”Fortunately for us, our goaltender is world-class and he made a couple of big saves.”

Connor Hellebuyck’s 35 saves help Jets knock off Islanders 4-2 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/17/islanders-jets-connor-hellebuyck-kyle-connor-ilya-sorokin/ Wed, 17 Jan 2024 05:15:59 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7409616 Kyle Connor scored an empty-net goal after a 16-game absence and Mason Appleton snapped a 25-game scoring drought to help the Winnipeg Jets get back to their winning ways with a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Tuesday.

Gabriel Vilardi and Neal Pionk also scored for the Jets, who had an eight-game win streak and 14-game point run halted Saturday by a 2-0 loss to Philadelphia. Connor Hellebuyck made 35 saves for Winnipeg.

Anders Lee scored twice for the Islanders, who were coming off a 5-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Monday.

Ilya Sorokin stopped 40 shots for New York, which is 1-5-0 in its last six matches and 2-5-1 during the month of January.

Winnipeg is still riding a franchise record for consecutive games of allowing three or fewer goals, which is now up to 33. The NHL record in the modern era (since 1967) is 35 by the Minnesota Wild in 2014-15.

The Jets have also allowed two or fewer goals in a franchise-record 13 straight games.

Winnipeg, which wrapped up a four-game homestand with a 3-1-0 record, received good news the morning of the game when Connor returned to action following a knee-on-knee hit by Ducks forward Ryan Strome in Anaheim on Dec. 10. The winger returned a week earlier than the initial six- to eight-week estimate. He had 19:03 of ice time.

Aretmi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere score early as Rangers edge Capitals 2-1 to end 4-game skid https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/14/aretmi-panarin-alexis-lafreniere-rangers-capitals-losing-streak/ Sun, 14 Jan 2024 21:39:07 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7398453 By Allan Kreda

Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere scored first-period goals and Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves and the New York Rangers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Washington Capitals on Sunday.

The Rangers were coming off Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Capitals on Saturday afternoon and a 1-4-1 overall start to 2024. New York survived constant pressure by the Capitals in the third — and failing to score on five power-play chances of their own — to emerge with the victory.

T.J. Oshie scored for Washington.

Panarin scored his team-best 27th goal of the season 50 seconds into the game with assists to Vincent Trocheck and Jacob Trouba. Panarin leads the Rangers with 59 points and has points in 35 of New York’s 42 games this season.

Trocheck continued his stellar season. He has 13 points, including five goals in his past eight games and 17 points in his past 14 games.

Lafreniere scored his 11th goal of the season with 50 seconds remaining in the opening period, snaring his own rebound after Washington netminder Charlie Lindgren made an acrobatic save. Defenseman Braden Schneider assisted.

Lindgren, brother of Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren, played for the second straight day. He also made a fabulous glove save on Chris Kreider at 15:23 of the second with Rangers on a 5-on-3 power-play and stopped Jimmy Vesey point-blank at 6:27 of the third after Vesey stripped Max Pacioretty of the puck in the Capitals zone.

Washington narrowed the deficit to 2-1 at 11:03 of the second period when Oshie scored his fourth off a goalmouth scramble in front of Shesterkin. Linemates Dylan Strome and Pacioretty assisted.

Shesterkin then denied Oshie at 13:22 of second and stopped a furious sequence in his crease in the closing moments of the middle period as the Rangers escaped with a 2-1 lead heading into the third.

The 28-year-old netminder, who won the Vezina Trophy in 2021-22, improved to 17-10-0 in his fifth NHL season.

Washington was without Alex Ovechkin for the second straight game with a lower-body injury. The 38-year-old forward was hurt Jan. 5 when he became entangled with Carolina’s Jordan Staal, then missed several subsequent practices. He has eight goals and 19 assists in 39 games this season. Ovechkin has 830 goals, second to Wayne Gretzky’s record 894.

Rangers forward Kaapo Kakko returned after missing 21 games with a lower-body injury, skating on right wing with Mika Zibanejad at center and Kreider on the left. The 22-year-old Kakko was injured on Nov. 27 against Buffalo at home in an awkward fall along the boards.

Capitals rally from a 2-goal deficit to beat the Rangers 3-2 and hand them a 4th consecutive loss https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/13/capitals-rally-from-a-2-goal-deficit-to-beat-the-rangers-3-2-and-hand-them-a-4th-consecutive-loss/ Sat, 13 Jan 2024 21:24:37 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7396293 By STEPHEN WHYNO

WASHINGTON — Nic Dowd tied the game in the third period by batting the puck in out of the air, T.J. Oshie scored the go-ahead goal 1:53 later and the Washington Capitals rallied to beat the New York Rangers 3-2 on Saturday, handing the Metropolitan Division leaders a fourth consecutive loss.

Dowd’s third-period goal came after Evgeny Kuznetsov passed the puck to himself off the boards, skated around the net and put a shot on net that Dowd knocked in. Dylan Strome then fed Oshie for a redirection goal in front with 11:31 left in regulation.

Anthony Mantha scored his 12th goal of the season on a nifty back-hander in the first after a perfect pass from Connor McMichael. Facing brother Ryan for just the second time in the NHL and with several family members in attendance, Capitals goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 25 saves in his return from injury.

Coming back from down 2-0, Washington avoided what would have been an eighth loss in 10 games.

The Rangers’ third-period collapse only exacerbated what first-year — and former Capitals — coach Peter Laviolette called a “rough patch.”

For much of the afternoon, it looked like this would be the get-right game for New York, thanks to two goals from defenseman Adam Fox, who has scored four in as many games, and a solid showing by Jonathan Quick. The veteran goalie, who is in his first year with his boyhood favorite team after winning the Stanley Cup as the backup for the Vegas Golden Knights, allowed two goals on six shots in the third period after stopping 14 of the first 15 he faced.

Mika Zibanejad returned for the Rangers after missing their game Thursday at St. Louis because of an illness.

The Capitals were without injured captain Alex Ovechkin, who was considered a game-time decision. Ovechkin was banged up Jan. 5 against Carolina and has been in and out of practice since.

Brendan Gallagher, Sean Monahan, Joel Armia scored to give Montreal a 3-0 lead early in the second period.

Gallagher opened the scoring midway through the first with his sixth goal of the season and first in 25 games

Monahan broke a 10-game drought 1:09 into the second with a shot that bounced off Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren and into the back of the net. Armia beat Quick between the legs 1:30 later.

New York finally got on the board at with 9:32 left in the second with Trocheck’ tip.

Trocheck then pulled off a nifty set play by tipping the puck between Mitchell Stephens’ legs during an offensive zone draw and setting up Panarin for his 25th with 5:31 left in the second.

Fox tied it at 9:30 of the third with a point shot through traffic.

Artemi Panarin scores, Vincent Trocheck adds 3 assists as Rangers down Blackhawks 4-1 https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/01/04/artemi-panarin-rangers-blackhawks-vincent-trocheck/ Fri, 05 Jan 2024 04:48:04 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7361558 Artemi Panarin scored his team-best 24th goal, Vincent Trocheck added three assists and the New York Rangers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 on Thursday night.

Chris Kreider, Jacob Trouba and Jimmy Vesey also scored for the Rangers, who rebounded from Tuesday’s 6-1 home loss to Carolina and improved to 10-1-0 in games after a loss this season. Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves.

Former Ranger Colin Blackwell scored for Chicago, which lost its fourth straight and for the sixth time in seven games.

The Rangers have won six of their last seven meetings with the Blackhawks and New York improved to 12-3-1 against Western Conference opponents.

“Any team in the NHL can beat any other team,” Trocheck said. ”You’ve got to be sure you don’t lapse. We always want to focus on defense and our best games are when we are solid defensively.”

Shesterkin had a relatively easy night’s work against the last-place Blackhawks as he improved to 16-8-0 and won for the sixth time in seven games.

Panarin opened the scoring, with a one-timer past Chicago goaltender Petr Mrazek at the 13-minute mark of the first period with assists to Alexis Lafreniere and Trocheck. Mrazek had 27 saves.

Panarin, who played his first two NHL seasons for the Blackhawks, extended his points streak to six games and has points in 31 of the New York’s 37 games this season. He leads the Rangers with 53 points.

“Good win,” Panarin said. “We’ll take that,″

Kreider made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 7:23 of the second. The puck deflected off Kreider’s skate into the Blackhawks net but was ruled not to be a distinct kicking motion since Kreider’s skates didn’t leave the ice and therefore a goal, Kreider’s 20th of the season. Kreider has a career-best points streak of eight games and the Rangers have scored a power-play goal in 10 of their last 12 games.

Kreider also reached the 20-goal mark for the ninth time. Only two players in Rangers history have recorded as many — Rod Gilbert with 12 seasons and Jean Ratelle, also with nine.

Blackwell narrowed the deficit to 2-1 at 17:03 of the second with his first goal of the season.

Trouba made it 3-1 with his third at 1:31 of the third period — with assists to Panarin and Trocheck — before Jimmy Vesey scored his eighth at 2:41.

Trocheck is second on the Rangers with 27 assists. Panarin has 29.

“There’s extra emphasis on games after a loss,” Trocheck said. “We try to make adjustments to what we were doing wrong.”

When scoring four or more goals in a game, the Rangers are 16-0-1. His team’s dominant performance pleased Rangers coach Peter Laviolette.

“I thought we did a good job,” he said. “I thought our game was a lot cleaner and more consistent than the other night.”

Chicago rookie Connor Bedard, the top overall pick in last June’s draft, made his New York-area debut and was held off the scoresheet. The 18-year-old forward leads the Blackhawks with 15 goals and 33 points.

“We worked hard but had tough luck around the net,” Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said. ”At times we played well, but it wasn’t enough. They are a powerful team.”

The contest also marked the NHL debut of Rangers forward Brennan Othmann, the 16th overall pick in 2021, who was recalled from AHL Hartford on Wednesday. He had nine goals and 23 points in 28 games this season for Hartford. Othmann skated on line with Nick Bonino and Jonny Brodzinski and had five shots in 12;26 of ice time.

“It was exciting. I just wanted to have fun and enjoy the moment,” said Othmann whose parents, grandparents and sister were at Madison Square Garden. ”I was a little nervous the first couple of shifts … I think the chances I created were positive, and that’s a good confidence builder going forward.”

Andrei Svechnikov scored twice and Pyotr Kochetkov made 28 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 6-1 on Tuesday for their fourth-straight win.

Former Ranger Brady Skjei added three assists for the surging Hurricanes and Jack Drury, Jordan Martinook, Jalen Chatfield and Michael Bunting also scored as Carolina improved to 7-1-3 in their last 11 games. Svechnikov has points in five straight games, including six goals.

“That was huge against a team at the top of the league right now,” Skjei said as the Hurricanes moved within five points of the first-place Rangers. ”It was a big win for us. We’re confident shooting the puck and we have elite guys who can score.”

Chris Kreider scored the lone goal for the Rangers, who have lost seven times this season by three of more goals.

“There’s no reason for us to show up and play that game,” Rangers captain Jacob Trouba said of his team’s subpar effort. ”We had no pushback. They are very opportunistic. They play a fast game. We just weren’t up the same speed as they were.”

After Rangers forward Alexis Lafreniere took an interference penalty 30 seconds into the game, Drury buried a shot past Igor Shesterkin for his first career power-play goal.

”I was fortunate to get a lot of good passes and put it in the back of the net,” said Drury, the 23-year-old nephew of Rangers general manager Chris Drury.

Svechnikov made it 2-0 at 19:29 of the opening period as Trouba was serving a holding penalty. Hurricanes leading scorer Sebastian Aho and defenseman Brent Burns assisted.

Aho has points in five straight and leads Carolina with 43 points, including 15 goals. He has 10 assists and 12 points overall in his last four games.

Carolina’s power play was potent in December, going 18-for-49 for the second-best percentage in the league behind Boston.

“We played perfect tonight and the power-play has been great,″ Svechnikov said. ”And Koch has been amazing. He’s getting better and better. It’s exciting to see him doing so well.”

Kreider broke through for New York at 4:30 of the second with his 19th goal, redirecting a Trouba shot past Kochetkov. Artemi Panarin also assisted and has points in 30 of his 36 games this season. He leads the Rangers with 51 points.

But Martinook quickly restored Carolina’s two-goal lead at 6:32 after a misplay with the puck by Shesterkin.

In the third, Chatfield made it 4-1 at 1:33 before Svechnikov scored again at 2:56. Bunting closed out the scoring at 15:49.

Svechnikov and Aho have combined for 23 points over the last five games.

“They’ve been dominant. There’s no other way to put it,” Skjei said. ”Our best players have been on fire the last week. It’s fun to watch. I just try to get them the puck.”

The 24-year-old Kochetkov improved to 6-1-2 over his last nine appearances for Carolina while Shesterkin had his five-game winning streak snapped.

The Hurricanes have only two road games left the rest of January with eight games at home.

“We scored on just about every scoring chance we had tonight,” Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour said. ”And we got some big saves. We’ve been on a good stretch. We just have to keep plugging along.”
