Kimberly Gotti, 55, and her 23-year-old daughter, Gianna Gotti, were attending an evening matchup between the Oyster Bay and Locust Valley high school boys’ basketball teams, which was being hosted by the latter in Lattingtown, according to NBC News. Gotti Jr.’s son Joseph reportedly plays for Oyster Bay.

A heated in exchange in the stands that occurred shortly after 8 p.m. allegedly prompted a 47-year-old woman to admonish adults who were hurling homophobic and misogynistic slurs at students.

Kimberly Gotti is accused of rushing that woman, punching her and taking the alleged victim’s hat, while Gianna allegedly joined in on the punching, tore at the woman’s hair and later boasted about the beatdown.

The victim reportedly suffered scratches to her face and injuries to her scalp, which she told police felt like it “was going to be ripped off.”

The Gotti women were arrested and spent the night in jail, but pleaded not guilty to third-degree assault, according to NBC News.

A Gotti family lawyer meanwhile claimed Kimberly Gotti was the first person punched in the fracas by the “very belligerent” other woman. He said Gianna only stepped in to help her mother.

John Gotti Jr., who was seen leaving court in Hempstead on Friday alongside his wife and daughter, told CBS News that his family has no plans to press charges.

Gotti Jr. is the son of infamous Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, who died of cancer in prison in 2002. “Junior” ran the crime family while his father was serving his life sentence.

Nassau County Police were unable to provide further information on the case against the Gotti women. They’re due back in court on March 6.

Albany priest accused of slashing ex-lover’s tires after relationship went bad https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/albany-priest-slashes-womans-tires/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 23:24:44 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7515274 The Episcopal Diocese of Albany is reportedly trying to figure out what to with a priest who’s accused of slashing the tires of an ex-lover and former coworker.

The Times Union spoke to the unidentified woman, who said she became involved in a consensual romance with Michael Greene, 49, shortly after she was hired to help with bookkeeping and travel arrangements at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church over the summer. The alleged victim, who’s in her 40s, said she told the priest she’d become uncomfortable with dating him while they worked together and left her freelance job in August after putting in just 16 hours.

Things went south shortly before Christmas when the pair traveled to New York City and Greene became aggressive while the woman was driving, she said. When she decided to stay alone in the Manhattan hotel room they had booked, the priest became angry and reportedly suggested she consider killing herself.

Weeks later, on Jan. 11, police believe Greene slashed the woman’s tires “with an unknown cutting instrument” while it was in a parking garage. He’s since been accused of criminal mischief and has a Feb. 20 court date. Greene hasn’t entered a plea.

He told the Times Union this week that the incident was a misunderstanding he expects to have resolved “soon.”

The Episcopal Diocese of Albany told the Times Union it was considering repercussions for Greene, but was unaware of the situation before being contacted by the upstate news outlet. They added that Greene, as a priest, is employed by his own church, not the diocese.

Greene did not attend St. Paul’s midweek Eucharist service on Wednesday, according to the Times Union.

The church didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. It’s unclear if they’re aware of the situation.

At least 2 dead after small plane crashes into vehicle, bursts into flames on I-75 in Naples, Florida https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/florida-naples-plane-crash-i75/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 22:44:41 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7515083 At least two people have died after a small plane crashed on Interstate 75 in Collier County, Fla., collided with a vehicle and burst into flames, authorities said Friday afternoon.

The aircraft was flying from Columbus, Ohio to the Naples Airport on its way to Fort Lauderdale, said Robin King, the director of communication with The Naples Airport Authority, in a statement to the Naples Daily News.

Five people were onboard the Bombardier Challenger 600 when the jet crashed on I-75 near Naples around 3:15 p.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said in a news release. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed at least two people died in the crash.

According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the plane landed on the southbound lanes of I-75, just before mile marker 106, near Pine Ridge Road. The incident created a massive explosion and closed all I-75 lanes in the area.

At least one vehicle was hit by the plane. Video taken by a traveler on the northbound lanes appears to show a thick, dark smoke cloud where the crash occurred.

In a recording between the pilot and the control tower, which was reported by local television station WBBH, the pilot can be heard calling in an emergency, and then saying the plane might not be able to make it to Naples Airport.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident. A preliminary incident report is usually available “the next business day,” the FAA said.

Troopers are asking drivers to please avoid the area and seek an alternate route.

Former Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci to release memoir in June https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/anthony-fauci-memoir-release-date/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 22:10:44 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514962 After 50 years of service, Dr. Anthony Fauci will tell his life story in a memoir set to be released on June 18.

Viking Press announced its plan Thursday to publish “On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service,” which will chronicle the expansive career of the 83-year-old public health expert who gained international recognition as the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I hope that this memoir will serve as a personalized document for the reader to understand better the daunting challenges that we have faced in public health over the past 40 years,” Fauci said in a statement. “I would also like to inspire younger individuals in particular to consider careers in public health and public service.”

The 496-page autobiography, available for presale in multiple formats, had already ranked as the #1 New Release on Amazon by Friday.

Dr. Fauci’s memoir will reach back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, his decades of dedication to caring for critically ill patients, and his many scientific accomplishments, and carry through close relationships with seven presidents,” his publisher said about the book.

From 1984 to 2022, the Brooklyn-born epidemiologist — who worked under U.S. presidents dating back to the Reagan era — served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and was the organization’s trailblazing HIV/AIDS researchers.

President George W. Bush awarded Fauci the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008 before he went on to advise Obama on the Zika and Ebola viruses.

Fauci became a lightning rod among conservatives when he clashed with the Trump administration about vaccine mandates and public-safety guidelines at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul and presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also took aim at the trusted medical authority with their respective books, “Deception: The Great COVID Cover-Up” and “The Real Anthony Fauci.”

After serving as President Biden’s chief medical adviser, Fauci took on a role as distinguished professor at Georgetown University in 2023, teaching in both the School of Medicine and McCourt School of Public Policy.

Oklahoma judge resigns after sending hundreds of texts mocking prosecutor during murder trial https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/oklahoma-judge-resigns-murder-trial-texts/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 21:42:07 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514832 An Oklahoma judge who sent more than 500 text messages and emojis from the bench during a murder trial has agreed to resign.

Traci Soderstrom, a district judge for Lincoln and Pottawatomie counties, sparked outrage in July 2023 after she was caught on camera exchanging messages during the trial of a man accused of fatally beating a 2-year-old in 2018.

Soderstrom, who took office last year after receiving 48% of the vote in 2022, allegedly sent several messages to bailiff Angela Miller in which she appeared to make fun of both prosecutors and witnesses.

The controversy made national news last year after security video published by The Oklahoman showed the judge scrolling through her messages for minutes at a time during jury selection, opening statements and testimonies.

An investigation later found Soderstrom’s text messages appeared to mock the prosecutor — who she said was “sweating through his coat” — and praise the “awesome” defense attorney.

In October, the chief justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court recommended Soderstrom’s removal. She had voluntarily suspended herself and was set to go on trial in a special court starting next week, but on Friday she announced she would resign from her position.

“When I took the judicial oath on January 9th, 2023, I promised to uphold the Constitution in a fair, even-handed and efficient manner. I promised to ensure the law and procedures were applied equally to Plaintiff and Defendant alike,” her resignation letter read in part.

“In spite of resistance at nearly every turn, I believe that I have done so. However, being human, I have also faltered,” she added.

Her resignation means Soderstrom has agreed she would not seek judicial office again in the state.

Chief witness against Rep. Matt Gaetz reportedly working with investigators in sex trafficking case https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/matt-gaetz-witness-sex-trafficking-case/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 21:32:16 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514805 Joel Greenberg, a chief witness in the sex trafficking case against Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, appears to be working with investigators trying to determine if the 41-year-old Republican had intercourse with a 17-year-old girl while serving in Congress.

“I can confirm that Mr. Greenberg is cooperating in a congressional investigation,” Greenberg’s attorney Fritz Scheller told the Daily News on Friday. “The nature of the investigation, as well as the subjects of the inquiry, are questions better left for congressional investigators to answer.”

Scheller clarified to The New York Times the investigation involved the House Ethics Committee.

Greenberg — Gaetz’s one-time friend and former wingman — is said to have provided documents to lawmakers supporting his claim that he witnessed the MAGA firebrand engaging in a sexual act with a teenager. Greenberg is also said to have cooperated in an earlier Department of Justice investigation of Gaetz that produced no charges.

Federal prosecutors have reportedly been looking into whether Gaetz paid for sex with the alleged victim and where the rendezvous occurred.

According to the Daily Beast, the congressman used Venmo to send Greenberg $900 late one night in May 2018. Greenberg allegedly divided that amount among three young women the following morning. One of those recipients was a minor.

The congressman’s old pal pleaded guilty to sex trafficking in 2021 and was sent to prison for 11 years.

Following Greenberg’s sentencing in 2022, Scheller said he was “disappointed” the Justice Department didn’t criminally charge anyone else, but did not give any names, according to CNN.

A spokesman for Gaetz told the Times that the Ethics Committee was looking at the same “unreliable” evidence that was seemingly dismissed by the Justice Department, and warned news outlets against “laundering smears from people in prison.”

Gaetz’s office hasn’t returned a request for comment. The congressman previously denied wrongdoing.

The Hollywood, Fla. native was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016. He’s the son of former Florida State Senator Don Gaetz. Among his most notable achievements as a U.S. congressman was spearheading the ousting of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in October.

Colin Jost to host 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/colin-jost-white-house-correspondents-dinner-host/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 21:17:37 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514726 “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost has been hired as the host of the 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington D.C. on April 27.

“His sharp insights perfectly meet this remarkable time of divided politics,” White House Correspondents’ Association President Kelly O’Donnell said on Friday while announcing the upcoming gig.

“His smart brand of comedy and keen observation will turn up the heat on the national news media and across the political spectrum,” she continued. “A night of laughs and reflections as our dinner honors freedom of the press as a cornerstone of American democracy. I am beyond excited to welcome one of NBC’s brightest stars to one of Washington’s greatest traditions.”

Along with fellow funnyman Michael Che, Jost has spent the past decade anchoring the venerable sketch comedy show’s fake-news segment, “Weekend Update.”

Jost began his career as an actual journalist with his local newspaper, the Staten Island Advance. He has penned articles for The New York Times and The New Yorker. His resume includes his New York Times bestselling memoir, “A Very Punchable Face.”

The 41-year-old comedian is no stranger to making fun of political figures, thanks to his weekly gig on late-night TV. That included a 2020 impersonation of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who once lived in the same dorm as Jost at Harvard.

Last year’s dinner was hosted by comedian Roy WoodJr., while former “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah did the honors in 2022. The 103-year-old event was cancelled the two previous years on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Every U.S. president except Donald Trump has attended the annual skewering of political and media figures. The 45th president has repeatedly stated “Saturday Night Live” should be investigated for mocking him while he was in office.

President Biden spoke at last year’s gathering, where he expressed support for Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who’s currently held captive by the Russian government on charges of espionage. Biden is expected to attend this year’s event as well.

Wood Jr. last year described the president as “an 80-year-old man begging us for four more years of work.” Biden and Trump appear headed for rematch in November.

Bodycam video shows Bridgeport, CT police shoot man after crashing car into home https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/bridgeport-connecticut-police-shooting-bodycam-video/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 20:49:31 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514834 Dash and bodycam video released by Connecticut Inspector General Robert Devlin on Friday shows the exact moment three police officers fatally shot a man after a brief car chase through Bridgeport into Ansonia, which ended with the driver crashing his vehicle into a home.

The Bridgeport Police Department Tactical Narcotics Team was alerted to a person, identified as 41-year-old Jonathan Mark Lewis Bell, driving around the city with weapons and drugs on Sunday around 5:15 p.m., NBC Connecticut reported.

“While conducting surveillance in the area of Oak Street in Bridgeport, officers observed Bell operating a Mercedes-Benz SUV with a female party in the passenger seat,” according to the inspector general’s office.

The officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Bell kept driving, through Bridgeport and onto Route 8 northbound.

“The pursuit ended when Bell drove off Route 8 into the town of Ansonia, crashing into a residence at 265 Division St., Ansonia,” the inspector general said. “Bridgeport Police Officer Mathew Hoffman, Officer Wilberto Rivera-Colon, and Sgt. Chris Robinson approached the Mercedes and directed Bell to show his hands.”

Video shows Bell smoking a cigarette after the crash while officers order him to keep his hands visible.

The female passenger was also pulled from the vehicle and told to stay on the ground.

According to the inspector general’s report, Bell appeared to reach for something inside the car, prompting the officers to shoot. He was raced to Griffin Hospital in Derby, where he died later that same night.

The medical examiner said he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and torso.

In a previous interview, Bell’s mother, Barbara Mankewich, blamed drugs, not police, for her son’s death.

The drugs took him,” she told NBC Connecticut. “I mean, that’s what took him really, not the police. The police were doing their job.”

Three longtime friends have attended every Super Bowl — and don’t intend to stop https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/three-friends-every-super-bowl-club/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 19:24:02 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514893&preview=true&preview_id=7514893 By PATRICK WHITTLE (Associated Press)

KENNEBUNK, Maine  — As long as they still have each other, they’re still going to go to every Super Bowl.

That’s the sentiment shared by three friends who say they are the final fans who can claim membership in the exclusive “never missed a Super Bowl” club. And they’re back again for number 58 — Super Bowl 58 — this year.

The three fans, all in their 80s, are Don Crisman of Maine, Gregory Eaton of Michigan and Tom Henschel, who splits time between Florida and Pennsylvania. The three are gathering this weekend in Las Vegas for the big game, and they’re hoping they can all make it to the sixtieth edition of the game two years from now.

The fans have sat together at the Super Bowl before, and they were still trying to make last-minute arrangements to do that for this year’s game this week. At the very least, they planned to get together for brunch on Friday, as always.

Eaton, 84, who runs a ground transportation company in Detroit, has been especially invested in this year’s football playoffs, as his beloved Detroit Lions won playoff games for the first time in more than three decades. The Lions fell just short of qualifying for their first Super Bowl, but Eaton said getting together with retirees Crisman, 87, and Henschel, 82, is the real draw of going to the big game year after year.

“Yeah, I’m a Lions fan,” Eaton said. “But in two years, I just hope I’ll be in good shape to be there again.”

The men have attended every game since the first AFL-NFL World Championship Game, the forerunner to the modern Super Bowl, took place in Los Angeles in 1967. This year’s game is at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Crisman and Henschel first met at the 1983 Super Bowl, but they didn’t meet Eaton until the mid-2010s. The fans have said in the past that they might be getting ready to let the tradition go, but every year they make the decision to do it again.

They’re part of an ever-dwindling group of people who have attended every Super Bowl that has also included media members, football executives, groundskeepers and others. Norma Hunt, wife of late football pioneer Lamar Hunt, was the sole woman to attend every Super Bowl until she died in June.

The fans all said the one thing that could keep them from attending is if they or one of the other two was not healthy enough or mobile enough to do it. Health concerns have cropped up for all of them in recent years, but they all said they’re feeling well enough to go this year and planning on the next two.

“I think that might be the factor that would definitely tip it,” Crisman said. “I’m not looking to be the survivor. I just go for the fun, and the guys. We’ll see what this year brings and address it in December ’24.”

The three men have witnessed all of the most iconic moments in Super Bowl history, but some of their most cherished memories of the game are a little more personal than David Tyree’s “helmet catch” in Super Bowl 42 or Scott Norwood’s missed field goal in Super Bowl 25. Crisman’s home is adorned with Super Bowl ephemera, right down to a collectible hat commemorating the first Bud Bowl, a promotion about beer that ran during Super Bowl 23 in 1989.

Eaton fondly remembers he got his tickets to the first Super Bowl from a friend from Michigan State University, Herb Adderley, who played for the Green Bay Packers. Henschel recalls being especially excited for Super Bowl 3 because New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath, like himself, was from the Pittsburgh area.

Crisman hadn’t yet acquired tickets for this year’s game as of mid-January, when telecommunications giant Verizon surprised him with complementary passes for himself and his daughter, Susan Metevier. Getting to Las Vegas will be much easier than his trip to Super Bowl 2 in 1968, which involved a 24-hour train ride to Miami.

The three men reminisce fondly about the era when it was possible to get a ticket to the big game for $8. Henschel recalls getting a face value ticket to Super Bowl 3 for $12 on the day of the game. This year, the cheapest tickets available are more than $7,000.

Henschel, a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, has a friendly rivalry with Crisman, a New England Patriots fan, as the two teams have met frequently in the playoffs over the years.

This year, the Patriots failed to contend, and the Steelers made an early playoff exit. But old traditions die hard, Henschel said.

“It’s funny because Don and I, he hates the Steelers and I hate the Patriots,” Henschel said. “Every time we see each other for the first time, we give each other the finger.”

It’ll happen again this year. And they hope at least a couple more times after that.

1 dead, 1 hospitalized after SUV plunges into freezing Connecticut river https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/02/09/five-mile-river-darien-car-plunges/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 17:35:03 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7514591 One person is dead after an SUV plunged into the ice-cold waters of the Five Mile River in Connecticut in the early hours of Friday, authorities said.

At approximately midnight, the Darien Police Department received a report that a late-model Nissan Rogue traveling eastbound on Tokeneke Road had crossed into the westbound lane, left the roadway, struck a fence, and then plummeted into Five Mile River, where it meets the Long Island Sound.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a “vehicle almost fully submerged in the near-freezing water,” Capt. Jeremiah P. Marron Jr. said in a news release.

One victim was located “floating face down in the outgoing current approximately 100 yards from the accident scene,” Marron said.

Two officers jumped in the water and rescued the victim, who was brought to a nearby dock to receive resuscitation efforts, as the Darien Fire Department and Darien EMS arrived at the scene.

As of Friday evening, the medical condition of that person was unknown.

Fire crew equipped with cold-water gear then went into the river and quickly recovered another victim from the submerged vehicle. That person was transported to an area hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Over “the next several hours,” multiple agencies assisted in the rescue effort. Marine vessels, air assets, and SCUBA divers were deployed, but according to Marron, there was no indication any other victims or vehicles were involved in the incident.

The two Darien police officers who entered the frigid waters were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for injuries and exposure. Their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening at this time, Marron said Friday morning.

The incident remains under active investigation.
